Lots are tested by an independent laboratory.

Three assays — purity by HPLC, identity by mass spectrometry, and bacterial endotoxin — run by a third-party laboratory rather than by us. Certificates are lot-specific and available on request, so the document you get back reports the lot in your hands rather than a representative batch. This page describes exactly what that panel establishes, and where it stops.

01 · The panel

What is measured, and what each assay answers.

A certificate is only useful if you know which question each line answers. These three assays answer three different questions, and none of them substitutes for another — which is why the panel is read as a set.

High-performance liquid chromatographyHPLC · purity

Separates the material into its components and measures each as a proportion of the total. This is the number most buyers mean when they say "purity": how much of what is in the vial is the named compound rather than related substances, residual reagents or truncated sequences. The measured figure for your lot is printed on its certificate.

How much material is in the vial, or whether the fill weight is accurate. Purity is a proportion, not a quantity.

Mass spectrometryMS · identity

Measures the molecular weight of the material and compares it against the expected weight for the compound named on the label. Purity without identity is a number about an unknown substance — this is the assay that establishes the substance is the one you ordered, and the two are read together or not at all.

That the material will behave a particular way in your assay. Identity is a confirmation of what the molecule is, and nothing further.

Bacterial endotoxin testingEndotoxin

Measures bacterial endotoxin content in the lyophilized material. Endotoxin is a common confound in cell-based and in-vivo research work, and it is invisible to both of the assays above — a lot can be chromatographically clean and still carry it. The method used and the result are stated on the certificate.

Sterility. An endotoxin result is not a sterility test, and nothing we supply is sterile-filled or intended for administration.

02 · Independence

We do not grade our own work.

The analysis is performed by an independent third-party laboratory. We are a supply business: we hold stock, we pick it, and we ship it. The measurement is done by somebody whose result is not improved by our material passing, and the laboratory that ran the panel is named on the certificate.

This distinction is worth being blunt about, because the wholesale market is full of certificates that are typeset by the seller. A document is only evidence to the extent that the person producing it had nothing to gain from the number on it.

03 · The certificate

Lot-specific, and matched to your vials.

Certificates are issued per lot. That is the difference between a document that describes your material and a document that describes material like yours — and it is the single most common place a wholesale certificate quietly becomes decorative.

Lot number on the labelThe lot on the certificate is the lot printed on the vial. Those two numbers agreeing is the whole verification.
Availability
A paid add-on, $75.00 per lotTick the box on the order form and one comes for each lot on the order, or ask the desk at any point before or afterwards. The charge is per lot rather than per vial, so it does not grow with the size of the order. Safety data sheets carry no charge. We do not claim a certificate is enclosed in every carton.

04 · Boundaries

Where the record stops.

  • This material is supplied for laboratory research use only.It is not a drug, food, cosmetic or medical device, and it is not sold for use in humans or animals. Nothing on this page describes an effect in a living subject, and we will not supply that information on request.
  • A certificate of analysis is a measurement, not an approval.It reports what an instrument found in a sample of one lot. It is not issued by, reviewed by, or filed with any regulatory body.
  • Nothing we supply is sterile or filled for administration.An endotoxin result is not a sterility test. Vials are sealed lyophilized powder intended for reconstitution in a laboratory setting.
  • We do not operate the laboratory that performs the analysis.Testing is contracted to an independent third party. We do not claim to own analytical instruments or to manufacture the material we hold.
  • Suitability for your protocol is yours to establish.Purity and identity describe the material. Whether it performs in your assay, at your conditions, is a question the certificate cannot answer.

05 · Questions

Common questions about our testing.

Do you provide a certificate of analysis?

Yes. Lots are tested by an independent third-party laboratory and the certificate is available on request — before you order, or after. It is lot-specific: it reports the results for the material in the vials you receive, not a representative or historical batch.

Who performs the testing?

An independent third-party analytical laboratory. We do not test our own material and report our own result, which is the arrangement that makes a certificate worth reading. The laboratory that ran the panel is named on the certificate itself.

What is on the panel?

HPLC for purity, mass spectrometry for identity, and bacterial endotoxin testing. Purity tells you how much of the material is the compound rather than related substances; mass spectrometry confirms the compound is the one named on the label; endotoxin testing measures bacterial endotoxin content in the lyophilized material.

Can I see a certificate before I place an order?

Yes. Ask for the compound and fill weight you are quoting and we will send the certificate for the current lot with the quote. If the lot changes between the quote and dispatch, ask again and you get the certificate for the lot that actually shipped.

How do I confirm the certificate matches the vials I received?

The lot number on the certificate is the lot number on the vial label. Match those two and the document in front of you describes the material in front of you. If they do not match, do not use the material and contact us.

Is this material pharmaceutical grade or sterile?

No. Everything we supply is research-grade material for laboratory use only. It is not manufactured to pharmacopoeial standards, it is not sterile-filled, and it is not supplied for use in humans or animals. A certificate of analysis reports what was measured in the material; it is not an approval of any kind.
